High-Speed Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) Pavement Surveys
Towards the end of 2003 Zetica successfully took part in the ‘Second GPR Performance Trials‘ organised by the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) on behalf of the UK Highways Agency (HA). The trials were designed to assess the capability of UK companies offering road-speed (minimum 80km/h) GPR pavement assessment surveys with the aim of ensuring the quality of GPR results provided to the HA and other authorities responsible for road maintenance.
The trials were divided into three main parts. These dealt with the accuracy with which data could be located on the highway network; the identification of changes in pavement construction and accuracy in determining the depth to the main road construction layers, with and without calibration information.
Zetica’s high speed GPR pavement assessment system (HiPAS) combines GPR, GPS and digital video data to provide a high level of positional accuracy (typically <0.5m laterally), which enables the GPR data to be precisely located with respect to available core information. This ability, combined with Zetica’s 14 years of experience in the interpretation of GPR data both from pavement studies and other applications, resulted in the company achieving one of the best overall scores in the trials.
